The eleven mile nature drive on the north end of Lake Apopka is fantastic. You drive between two canals in a vast swamp/marsh. Birds are everywhere , easy to take pictures of them and occasionally you see an alligator or 10! During summer the pump house (about half way round ) is a real hang out spot for these Florida dinosaurs so if you’ve never seen one up close, in the wild, before this is your best chance.
The drive begins at Lust Road and ends on Jones Road in Orange County, Fla. There is a ten mile per hour speed limit, so allow approximately two hours for the drive depending on stops along the way. Vehicles pulling trailers are not allowed.
Other wildlife you might come across include otter, raccoon, bobcat, coyotes plus about every species of bird known to Florida. You might even see a bald eagle or a red-shouldered hawk.
You can get a narrated tour by following the instructions posted at the gate or click here – but if you have the time it’s well worthwhile. There are many stopping points to get out and walk around if you want or you can stay in the car and take it all in as you drive through.
This place is a well hidden secret. Great chance to see an amazing array of Wildlife at your own pace. Go out and see the real Florida!
